Background of the Study
Language modernization in Nigeria reflects the interplay between traditional linguistic norms and contemporary communication technologies. Traditional communication, often steeped in cultural conventions and formal syntax, is gradually influenced by digital platforms where brevity and informality dominate (Okafor, 2023). This study explores the impact of language modernization on Nigerian syntax by comparing traditional forms of communication—such as formal speeches and literature—with digital communication practices seen in emails, social media posts, and instant messaging. Digital discourse tends to favor simplified sentence structures, creative punctuation, and non-standard syntactic forms, which may lead to syntactic erosion or innovative adaptations (Ijeoma, 2024). By employing a comparative analysis, the research aims to document changes in syntactic patterns and assess the implications of these shifts on clarity, comprehension, and language preservation. This study uses corpus linguistics and discourse analysis to capture the dynamic evolution of Nigerian syntax in a digital age, highlighting both challenges and opportunities arising from modernization (Chinonso, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Despite significant changes in communication practices due to digitalization, there is limited research on how language modernization affects Nigerian syntax. Most studies focus on vocabulary changes or stylistic shifts, with little attention to syntactic structures (Adeniyi, 2023). This gap makes it difficult to understand the long-term implications of digital communication on formal language use. The tension between traditional syntactic norms and emerging digital practices raises questions about language degradation or evolution. Without systematic comparative analysis, policymakers and educators lack empirical evidence to guide language teaching and preservation efforts. This study addresses these concerns by examining syntactic differences between traditional and digital communication modes (Okafor, 2023).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To compare syntactic structures in traditional and digital communication.
  2. To assess the impact of modernization on Nigerian syntax.
  3. To propose strategies for maintaining clarity in evolving language use.

Research Questions

  1. How does digital communication alter traditional syntactic patterns in Nigeria?
  2. What syntactic changes are most evident in modern digital discourse?
  3. How can language preservation be balanced with modernization?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it investigates the effects of language modernization on Nigerian syntax, providing insights into how traditional and digital communication intersect. The findings will inform educators, linguists, and policymakers about strategies to preserve syntactic integrity while embracing digital innovations (Okafor, 2023; Ijeoma, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to comparing syntactic features in traditional and digital communication in Nigeria.

Definitions of Terms

  • Language Modernization: The process by which language adapts to contemporary technological and social changes.
  • Syntax: The set of rules that govern sentence structure.
  • Digital Communication: Informal language use in electronic media such as social media and emails.
